About the position

The Recycling Technician position at the Department of Justice is responsible for managing the collection and processing of recyclable materials within a correctional facility. This role ensures compliance with recycling policies, oversees waste management, and provides training to inmates on recycling procedures. The technician plays a crucial part in maintaining a secure environment while promoting sustainability practices within the institution.

Responsibilities

• Collect and process all mandatory recyclable materials.
• Conduct periodic surveys to ensure compliance with recycling policies.
• Manage the proper storage and disposal of the institution's waste stream, including solid waste and recoverable special wastes.
• Research and identify potential pollution prevention projects.
• Provide training to inmates on recycling administration procedures and evaluate their performance.
• Supervise and train inmates in the operation and maintenance of recycling equipment such as bailers, tractors, and forklifts.
• Maintain security of the institution as part of correctional responsibilities.

Requirements

• U.S. Citizenship is required.
• At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in federal service.
• Experience interpreting and applying federal, state, and local regulations related to recycling programs.
• Knowledge of recycling principles, concepts, and methods.
• Experience supervising and training others on recycling methods and associated equipment.
