About the position

The University of Southern Mississippi is currently accepting applications for the position of Refuse Crew Member I. This position is located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and is a full-time staff role within the Administration Physical Plant. The primary responsibility of this role is to collect and remove waste materials and refuse from all areas of the campus, including recycling efforts. The Refuse Crew Member I will participate in trash removal services and general maintenance needs for assigned events, completing all tasks as assigned, including those related to football, baseball, and other events.

Responsibilities

  • Collects and disposes of refuse from campus and assists Sustainability department with recycling collection as coordinated with the Custodial Supervisor.
  • Cleans areas used for special events on campus before and after the events.
  • Assists in the set up and removal of trash containers and trash at large public areas such as at the football stadium, basketball coliseum, baseball stadium, Spirit Park, Southern Station, Shoemaker Square, Centennial Green, and Bennett Auditorium.
  • Maintains a clean cart and equipment.
  • Performs clean up, maintenance, and sanitation of dumpsters, bins, and pits and areas surrounding these containers that are impacted by litter or debris.
  • Applies spray and granules to reduce foul smells from trash cans and dumpsters.
  • Responds to emergency situations during and after hours, including property damage, personal injury, water leaks, flooding, overflowing restroom fixtures, broken window or door glass, and accidents resulting in the appearance of bodily fluids.
  • Serves as a member of the Physical Plant Essential Personnel and participates in pre-emergency preparations and post-emergency recovery efforts as directed.
  • Additional duties as assigned by Custodial Leadership.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Valid Driver's License and the ability to obtain a driver's clearance to operate university vehicles.
  • Skill in giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Ability to utilize equipment and University vehicle, as well as standard hand tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, and pliers.
  • Ability to drive a cart and trailer.
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with members of the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with university faculty and staff, students, and the general public.
  • Ability to work successfully as a member of a team and independently with moderate supervision.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Ability to obtain a driver's license prior to employment.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergencies.
  • Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, University policies and procedures.

Nice-to-haves

  • Three (3) months of related experience in a higher education setting or commercial cleaning environment.
