About the position

The Region Grassroots Manager at the American Heart Association is responsible for recruiting, mobilizing, retaining, and recognizing volunteer advocates within the Midwest Region. This role focuses on executing grassroots strategies to advance public policy priorities at various levels, ensuring effective volunteer engagement through communication and training. The position offers flexibility in location and emphasizes work-life harmonization, providing access to training resources and support.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a strategic plan for recruiting, mobilizing, and retaining You're the Cure members in the assigned territory.
  • Maintain regular communication with You're the Cure advocates to keep them engaged throughout the year.
  • Activate and engage advocates in offline tactics to impact public policy campaigns, such as lobby days and rallies.
  • Write and launch action alerts to mobilize advocates to communicate with lawmakers and industry leaders.
  • Recruit grassroots networkers and key contact volunteers through community events and Association-related activities.
  • Cultivate opportunities for grassroots networkers to advance their engagement in advocacy.
  • Develop volunteer leaders to assist with advocate recruitment, training, and outreach.
  • Plan and implement grassroots training for volunteers and staff to educate on the Association's mission and priorities.
  • Recognize advocates for their contributions during policy campaigns.
  • Evaluate You're the Cure program metrics in the assigned territory.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, Communications, or a related area, or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in community organizing, volunteer management, public policy, or related fields.
  • Ability to recruit, direct, mentor, and supervise volunteers.
  • Working knowledge of grassroots advocacy principles.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects under time constraints.
  • Self-starter with minimal supervision required.
  • Ability to travel overnight approximately 10% of the time.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with integrated campaign strategies including media advocacy and coalition-building.
  • Basic understanding of social media outreach.
  • Experience with web-based grassroots action sites for campaign management.
  • Knowledge of capacity building in the community.
  • Understanding of the legislative process at various levels.
