About the position

The Advanced Automation Engineer - Process & Technology - Americas will serve as a technical leader focusing on Automation and Robotics for both future and existing general fabrication and assembly lines within the Americas plants. This role is crucial for ensuring that automation strategies align with the company's business goals and will involve significant collaboration with various teams, including Global and Americas Engineering Design, Manufacturing, plant engineering, reliability & maintenance, and operations teams. The position is based in Jessup, Maryland, and reports to the Manager of Manufacturing Engineering Process & Technology - Americas. The engineer will be responsible for leading all controls and automation capital projects at BAC Americas manufacturing sites, managing the end-to-end delivery of these projects, and acting as the regional and site expert on controls and automation systems. This includes providing leadership in software modification, optimizing programming, and maintaining comprehensive records. The engineer will also be tasked with designing and selecting robotic systems, running simulations, programming, implementing, and commissioning these systems. In addition to technical responsibilities, the engineer will provide expertise on reliability issues related to factory systems such as SCADA, PLC, HMI, DCS, and servo-motion control, aiming to maximize plant efficiency and reliability. The role also involves generating RFPs/RFQs for automation equipment, developing maintenance documents and training materials, and identifying and specifying new equipment or technology. The engineer will support cost estimates and analysis, making recommendations regarding new platforms and technologies, and coordinate handoffs from global project teams to facilitate the regional launch of these innovations.

Responsibilities

  • Develop automation plans that align with company business goals.
  • Lead all controls and automation capital projects at BAC Americas manufacturing sites.
  • Manage end-to-end delivery of capital projects on new and innovative technology equipment, controls, and automation.
  • Act as the regional and site expert on controls and automation systems.
  • Provide leadership in the management of software modification and optimizing programming.
  • Maintain all records related to automation systems.
  • Design/select robotic systems, run simulations, program, implement, and commission them.
  • Provide technical expertise and input into reliability issues for factory systems to maximize plant efficiency and reliability.
  • Support and assist controls engineer in troubleshooting breakdowns and equipment failures.
  • Generate RFP/RFQs for automation equipment to support automation in various manufacturing processes.
  • Develop maintenance documents and training materials.
  • Identify, develop, and specify new equipment/technology and lead/support regional implementation.
  • Support cost estimates/analysis and make recommendations regarding manufacturing processes of new platforms and technologies.
  • Coordinate handoffs from Global project teams to support the regional launch of new platforms/technologies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in electrical, mechatronics, or robotics engineering.
  • 5+ years of experience in robotic programming and application.
  • Excellent robotic background and programming skills on various programming languages and systems.
  • Software and PLC programming knowledge desirable.
  • Technical expertise complemented by self-motivation and relationship building skills.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to communicate technical information.
  • Knowledge of AI and machine learning applications.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, experience with Agile methodologies preferred.
  • Demonstrated strong engineering skills, including 2D/3D CAD design and GD&T experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency for data collection, analysis, presentation, and decision making.
  • Experience with DFMA and PFMEA desirable.
  • Experience with change management methodologies preferred.
  • Experience with industrial equipment, automation & IoT preferred.
