About the position

The position involves supervising bond production and underwriting activities within a regional framework at Selective Insurance, a midsized property and casualty insurance company. The role focuses on managing risk acceptance, ensuring profitability, and developing agency relationships to enhance marketing opportunities in bond product lines. The individual will also be responsible for training staff, maintaining high production standards, and providing exceptional customer service while adhering to legal and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise bond production and underwriting activities.
  • Oversee acceptance, declination, and rating of risks.
  • Meet profitability goals within the assigned region.
  • Work with the Small Business Team on underwriting new and renewal surety and fidelity business.
  • Establish and develop agency relationships for marketing opportunities.
  • Review and determine appropriate underwriting business decisions.
  • Market to agency force and establish solid agency relationships.
  • Conduct underwriting meetings and mediate issues between agents, insureds, and other departments.
  • Evaluate new business and renewal submissions from underwriting staff.
  • Underwrite accounts that exceed field authority.
  • Prepare and submit concise underwriting recommendations to management.
  • Supervise and monitor staff activities to ensure quality work and high production standards.
  • Monitor achievement of region's profitability and production goals.
  • Use bond system automation to improve efficiencies.
  • Supervise training and cross-training of subordinate staff.
  • Educate AMS staff on bond production and cross-sell opportunities.
  • Communicate with regional management about marketing activities and issues.
  • Work with SBU to determine strategic and tactical goals for profitable growth.

Requirements

  • Broad knowledge of surety & fidelity underwriting environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers/peers.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Valid state-issued driver's license in good standing and ability to drive an automobile.
  • College degree in a financial-related area such as accounting, finance, business administration, or marketing preferred.
  • 8+ years of bond underwriting or similar experience in another surety company.
  • AFSB, AU, CPCU preferred.
