This position is pivotal in identifying and closing new business opportunities within a designated region, specifically targeting small to midsize retail chain customers. As a Regional Business Development Manager, you will be backed by industry-leading supply chain experts, enabling you to provide tailored solutions that meet the unique needs of your clients. In this role, you will be responsible for managing your territory and time efficiently, which includes working from a home office, conducting in-person customer meetings, and traveling as necessary. You will oversee the entire sales process, from prospecting and qualifying leads to developing needs and articulating a compelling value proposition that leads to closing deals. Your efforts will be tracked through a CRM tool, allowing you to identify opportunities and monitor sales activities effectively. Additionally, you will be expected to stay current with market trends, competition, and financials, ensuring that you can provide informed insights to your clients. Regular updates will be provided to leadership, sharing your sales activities and prospective customer findings. This role not only offers a competitive base salary but also includes a quarterly commission plan, making it a true pay-for-performance opportunity. The working conditions for this position are primarily remote, with a significant amount of travel expected, exceeding 75%. You will have the chance to work with a diverse range of stakeholders, including company executives, regional directors, and store personnel, making strong communication and organizational skills essential for success.

Responsibilities

  • Manage territory and time efficiently, including home office work, in-person customer meetings, and travel.
  • Manage the entire sales process: prospect, qualify, needs development, value proposition, and close.
  • Oversee sales development of new customers through cold calling, email, and social visits.
  • Track sales activities through a CRM tool, identifying opportunities within your territory.
  • Understand and articulate McLane's products and service portfolio.
  • Stay current with market trends, competition, financials, and transportation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in business or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in generating new business.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in the grocery, sales, retail, or similar job fields.
  • Strong leadership abilities, including excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Professional attitude and strong organizational skills.
  • Self-confidence, multi-tasking, and decision-making skills.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with various reporting level groups, including executives and store personnel.
  • Ability to draft reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Valid driver's license and a safe driving record.
  • Ability to pass an education/experience verification, drug screen, and criminal background check.
