About the position

The Regional Director of Medical Staff Operations is a pivotal operational leadership role within MedStar Health, tasked with overseeing and enhancing the operational efficiency of medical staff services across multiple regionally based entities. This position plays a crucial role in supporting medical credentialing, privileging, and related activities, ensuring these processes are conducted effectively, in compliance with regulatory standards, and with a focus on continuous improvement. The director will lead initiatives aimed at optimizing operations, increasing customer satisfaction, and fostering collaboration across the healthcare system. In this role, the director will provide leadership and direction for medical staff operations across the region, aligning departmental goals with the broader organizational strategy. They will develop and implement operational and strategic initiatives to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of credentialing, privileging, and other medical staff processes. Leading and mentoring a team of medical staff professionals is essential, ensuring high performance, professional development, and engagement within the team. The director will oversee the credentialing, re-credentialing, and privileging processes for medical staff across multiple entities, ensuring compliance with all regulatory and accreditation standards. Where applicable, they will standardize processes and practices across the region to ensure consistency, accuracy, and efficiency. Additionally, the director will manage resources, budgets, and staffing needs to optimize the operational effectiveness of medical staff services. Process improvement initiatives will be a key focus, aimed at reducing turnaround times, eliminating bottlenecks, and enhancing overall operational efficiency. The director will identify opportunities to streamline and automate credentialing, privileging, and related activities, leveraging technology and best practices. Collaboration with other departments will be necessary to implement solutions that improve data management, workflow, and reporting, while building and maintaining strong relationships with medical staff leadership, department leaders, and external partners to facilitate collaboration and alignment. The director will also oversee MSO management and support select committees, including the credentials committee, medical executive committee, medical staff meetings, and the Quality and Safety Professional Affairs Committee (QSPAC). They will develop and implement strategies to improve customer satisfaction for providers, administrators, and other stakeholders interacting with medical staff services. As the regional point of contact, the director will resolve complex issues related to credentialing, privileging, regulatory agencies, and medical staff operations within supported entities. Ensuring compliance with relevant regulatory requirements, such as The Joint Commission and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, is critical. The director will conduct regular audits and reviews of credentialing and privileging files, processes, and outcomes to maintain high standards of quality and compliance. Utilizing data analytics to monitor performance will be essential to ensure the integrity and security of medical staff data across all facilities in the region, identifying trends and driving decision-making in medical staff operations. The director will prepare and present reports to senior leadership on the status of credentialing, re-credentialing, privileging, and process improvement initiatives, working collaboratively with various stakeholders to develop, revise, and implement policies, procedures, and training related to credentialing and medical staff services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in health/hospital administration or related field required; Master's degree preferred.
  • 5-7 years of progressive experience managing and leading medical staff functions for a large academic medical center or health system, including direct oversight of medical staff credentialing.
  • 8-10 years of demonstrated experience in regulatory compliance as it relates to the organized Medical Staff.
  • Demonstrated experience in credentialing, privileging, physician performance/peer review processes, and working with physician leaders preferred.
  • CPMSM - Certified Professional Medical Services Management upon hire preferred; NAMSS certification upon hire preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills and working knowledge of business tools such as Microsoft Office or similar products.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state regulations and standards for the provision of professional education of healthcare providers.
  • Exemplary and timely customer service approach in communicating with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Skilled problem solver, with ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities, workloads, and timelines.
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills; rigorous attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and adhere to strict deadlines independently and/or on a team.
  • Self-directed, self-motivated team player, critical thinker; experienced at effectively leading a team.
