About the position

Putnam|Northern Westchester BOCES anticipates a provisional appointment for a Regional Safety Technician within the Regional Safety Services department. Reporting to the Regional Safety Coordinator, this position conducts workshops and training programs designed to assist the component school districts in maintaining compliance with safety, health and emergency procedure laws and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct workshops and training programs for school districts on safety, health, and emergency procedures.
  • Work closely with school districts to develop and implement health and safety programs.
  • Conduct and evaluate drills focused on a multi-hazard approach to emergencies.
  • Assist the Regional Safety Coordinator in implementing changes and programs for compliance with health and safety laws.
  • Conduct inspections to assess risks of exposure to potential threats and hazards in schools.
  • Develop, provide, and coordinate training and programs for school personnel, parents, and community groups.
  • Assist school districts in researching and summarizing health and safety regulations and laws.
  • Help write plans and protocols related to health and safety compliance.
  • Assist with chemical inventory, management, and disposal for school districts.
  • Support the development of a chemical hygiene plan for participating school districts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental, physical, or biological science field OR a bachelor's degree and one (1) year of paid experience in environmental health or safety.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Knowledge of statutory and regulatory requirements relating to health, safety, and emergency planning in schools.

Nice-to-haves

  • Code Enforcement Official and/or Building Safety Inspector certification(s).
  • Previous experience facilitating group trainings and public speaking skills.
  • Previous experience in a school health and safety setting.
  • Knowledge of toxic substances and their potential adverse effects.
