About the position

The Registered Architect position at the University of Hawaii involves overseeing architectural projects for the Community College System. The role includes developing project schedules, evaluating contractor proposals, conducting inspections, and preparing educational specifications for campus development. The architect will also manage environmental assessments, coordinate construction plans, and ensure compliance with university standards while maintaining effective communication among stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Assists campuses in preparing the multi-year and biennial special R&M Program for each campus of the Community College System.
  • Develops project schedules to coincide with the instructional programs of the Community College Campuses.
  • Evaluates contractor's proposals and recommends appropriate action.
  • Inspects construction and conducts OAC, pre-construction, and final inspection meetings.
  • Certifies the completion of the project.
  • Prepares or coordinates the preparation of the Educational Specifications outlining planning objectives, space standards, and design criteria.
  • Develops evaluation criteria for site utilization studies and alternative development plans.
  • Prepares or coordinates the preparation of developmental schedules and cost estimates.
  • Manages and coordinates the preparation of environmental assessments of proposed actions.
  • Prepares or coordinates the preparation of schematic floor plans, cost estimates, time schedules, and scope of work to implement projects.
  • Prepares or coordinates the preparation of and reviews construction plans and specifications for conformance with Educational Specifications.
  • Ascertains that assignable spaces, functional relationships, and equipment needs are adequate.
  • Reviews the design for aesthetic value and efficiency to keep the project within budget.
  • Compiles the furniture and equipment needs for the project in consultation with the users.
  • Drafts in CADD and utilizes construction management software and other project management software.
  • Accesses all building spaces to assess, investigate, and manage projects.
  • Assists in problem-solving during construction and performs periodic and final inspections of the project.
  • Prepares cost estimates for each project.
  • Serves as spokesperson, interpreter, and dispatcher of information among consultants, contractors, and the University community.
  • Reviews system designs, specifications, and material submittals of consultants and contractors to ensure compliance with University standards.
  • Maintains and manages project archive of past and current projects.
  • Manages the preparation of construction plans and specifications.

Requirements

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Architecture or Architectural Engineering.
  • 6 years of progressively responsible professional experience in architectural work, with 3 years as a registered architect.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques in architecture or architectural engineering.
  • Ability to resolve complex problems using creative reasoning and logic.
  • Ability to interpret and present information clearly in writing and verbally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing and CAD software.
  • Possession of a Hawaii State Certificate of Registration as a professional architect.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in preparing or directing the preparation of master plans for large developments.
  • Familiarity with computers for various tasks including space inventory and management supervision.
