About the position

The Registered Nurse (RN) position at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation is a full-time role focused on providing direct clinical supervision and maintaining high clinical standards within the nursing units. The RN will be responsible for coordinating all unit operations during their assigned shift, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and facilitating the proper placement of patients in collaboration with the Patient Access Coordinator. This role requires the RN to make shift assignments, manage staff flexibly according to patient needs, and ensure that documentation standards are met. In addition to administrative duties, the RN will provide direct patient care, especially during unplanned changes in patient acuity or staffing levels. The RN serves as a liaison between physicians and hospital departments, working to ensure smooth operations and high patient satisfaction scores. The role also involves holding staff accountable for their performance, identifying areas for improvement, and providing feedback to the Clinical Manager or Director. The RN is expected to demonstrate expert communication skills, maintain current knowledge in nursing practice, and model professional nursing behavior. Responsibilities

  • Provide patient care, treatment, and services within the scope of their license, certification or registration and as required by Federal and State laws and regulations.
  • Coordinate all unit operations on assigned shift and assure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Facilitate proper placement of patients on nursing unit in collaboration with the Patient Access Coordinator or designee.
  • Make shift assignments and complete assignment board.
  • Adjust all staff appropriately utilizing the Resource Management Plan.
  • Ensure staff compliance with documentation standards.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for unit staff and encourage evidence-based practice.
  • Provide direct patient care for a team of patients when indicated by unplanned changes in acuity, peak census, or staffing.
  • Act as a liaison between physicians and hospital departments to facilitate smooth operations of the unit during assigned shift.
  • Work with staff to facilitate patient satisfaction scores within acceptable range.
  • Hold staff accountable for performance and identify practice areas needing improvement.
  • Demonstrate a self-directed interdisciplinary leadership style.
  • Maintain current knowledge and competency in nursing practice.
  • Demonstrate and model expert communication skills by listening and understanding another's point of view.
  • Assist Clinical Manager/Director in holding unit staff accountable for ensuring patient safety through compliance with patient safety initiatives and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist Clinical Manager/Director by following up and making initial comments on risk reports/events occurring during assigned shifts.
  • Encourage peers and actively participate in unit-related community events.

Requirements

  • Bachelors of Nursing (BSN)
  • RN License; must be licensed or eligible to practice pending licensure as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • VLS - American Heart 'Healthcare Provider' (HCP) - AHA approved
  • 2.5 years general nursing experience
  • Currently an RN III within Valley Health or Mary Free Bed systems or meets criteria to be hired as an RN III OR; Currently in non-ladder RN position within Valley Health or Mary Free Bed systems with a minimum of 5 years recent relevant experiences OR; Currently an RN II within Valley Health or Mary Free Bed systems with a minimum overall rating of 'exceeds standards' on most recent performance appraisal.
  • Certified Rehabilitation RN (CRRN) required within three (3) years in Rehab Charge RN Role.
  • Demonstrates ability to set priorities and make appropriate decisions.
  • Competent to provide care using the nursing process.
  • Demonstrates mentoring, teaching, and leadership skills.
  • Knowledge in the cognitive, physical, emotional, and chronological stages of human growth and development.

  • National Certification by specialty organization preferred.
