About the position

The registered professional nurse is responsible for utilizing job skills to effectively carry out the nursing process, which includes assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, evaluation, documentation, and time management. This role emphasizes quality communication, teamwork, and professionalism. The nurse will direct, coordinate, and implement patient teaching, quality and safety initiatives, and the activities of other health team personnel while maintaining the standards of professional nursing practice. As a Registered Nurse I (RN I), the individual will be responsible for the care of the assigned patient population. This position requires the completion of yearly mandatory competencies, as well as any unit-specific competencies identified by the Director or Designee that relate to the patient population of their unit. Additionally, the RN I must fulfill the Professional Practice Ladder requirements, which include assuming responsibility as Charge Nurse, participating in Performance Improvement (PI) activities, and engaging in department initiatives. Communication and sharing of information with the Director/Designee and co-workers from unit or hospital committees are essential. The RN I is also expected to participate in educational opportunities such as Valley Health paid Education/Seminar/Conference, workshops, or Nursing Articles. The portfolio must be current and submitted to the Director/Designee annually by March 1st. The RN I routinely solicits and validates patient and family satisfaction, participates in peer review for the unit, and develops educational materials for staff, patients, and family members.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize nursing skills to carry out the nursing process including assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, evaluation, documentation, and time management.
  • Ensure quality communication, teamwork, and professionalism in all interactions.
  • Direct, coordinate, and implement patient teaching and quality/safety initiatives.
  • Oversee the activities of other health team personnel while maintaining professional nursing standards.
  • Complete yearly mandatory competencies and unit-specific competencies as required.
  • Assume responsibility as Charge Nurse and participate in Performance Improvement activities.
  • Communicate and share information with the Director/Designee and co-workers from unit or hospital committees.
  • Participate in educational opportunities and maintain a current portfolio for annual submission.
  • Solicit and validate patient/family satisfaction and participate in peer review for the unit.
  • Develop educational materials for staff, patients, and family members.

Requirements

  • Associates Nursing (RN Diploma, ASN or ADN) required.
  • Bachelors Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • RN License required.
  • BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) - American Heart Association approved required.
  • Competent in providing care based on the cognitive, physical, emotional, and chronological stages of human growth and development.
  • Competent to provide care to patients utilizing the nursing process.
  • Must have a reliable means of phone communication with the hospital.
  • Eligibility to Test Letter from the Virginia Board of Nursing if a Virginia resident or Non-Compact state resident.
