The registered professional nurse in the Labor & Delivery department is responsible for utilizing their nursing skills to effectively carry out the nursing process. This includes assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, evaluation, documentation, and time management. The RN is expected to maintain quality communication, teamwork, and professionalism while directing, coordinating, and implementing patient teaching, quality and safety initiatives, and the activities of other health team personnel. The RN must uphold the standards of professional nursing and ensure that patient care is delivered effectively and compassionately. As a Registered Nurse III (RN III), the nurse is responsible for the care of the assigned patient population. This role requires the completion of yearly mandatory competencies and any unit-specific competencies identified by the Director or Designee. The RN III must also fulfill the requirements of the Professional Practice Ladder, which includes assuming the role of Charge Nurse, participating in Performance Improvement (PI) activities, and engaging in department initiatives. Communication and sharing of information with the Director/Designee and co-workers from unit or hospital committees are essential. The RN is also required to maintain a current portfolio, which must be submitted to the Director/Designee annually by March 1st. The RN III routinely solicits and validates patient and family satisfaction, participates in peer reviews for the unit, and develops educational materials such as bulletin boards or posters to inform staff, patients, and family members about relevant health information. This position is critical in ensuring that the highest standards of care are maintained in the Labor & Delivery department, contributing to the overall mission of Valley Health to create an environment where caregivers thrive physically, financially, and emotionally.
