About the position

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Operating Room at Ottumwa Regional Health Center is responsible for delivering safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care in the operating room and other areas of perioperative services. This role involves maintaining surgical standards of nursing practice, acting as a patient advocate, and supporting the organization's mission and values. The RN will manage time, equipment, and personnel effectively while ensuring patient safety and comfort during surgical procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care in the operating room.
  • Maintain surgical standards of nursing practice.
  • Organize time, equipment, supplies, and personnel for effective case management.
  • Delegate activities appropriate to available staff members for patient care.
  • Explain intra-operative procedures and care to patients.
  • Perform the circulating/scrub nurse's role following approved operating room procedures.
  • Assemble and provide properly functioning equipment, supplies, and instruments before procedures.
  • Assist with the proper and safe positioning of patients and prepare operative sites as directed.
  • Provide continuity of patient care by communicating with other perioperative care personnel.
  • Respond in a timely manner to meet the needs of patients and physicians.
  • Evaluate and complete patient's medical records for appropriate consents and data pertinent to their care.
  • Support anesthesia personnel and assist during all methods of anesthesia.
  • Prepare the surgical site according to established procedures.
  • Verify identity, operative site, surgical procedure, and patient allergies prior to incision.
  • Maintain a safe environment in the operating room for patients and staff.
  • Monitor sterile technique of team members and implement aseptic technique.
  • Anticipate needs of the surgical team to facilitate case progression.
  • Demonstrate thorough, concise, and timely documentation.
  • Monitor physical status of patients and administer drugs and solutions as prescribed.
  • Maintain correct count of sponges, needles, and instrumentation with the scrub staff.
  • Manage culture/specimen collection according to hospital policy.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to changes in nursing practice.
  • Perform interventions to ensure patients return to normothermia postoperatively.
  • Accompany patients to ODS/PACU and give post-operative reports to unit staff.
  • Assist with QI projects and special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current Active Iowa Registered Nurse Licensure.
  • ACLS/BLS required, PALS preferred but not required.
  • In-depth knowledge and skill related to surgical patients and patient care requirements.
  • Ability to work within established guidelines and contribute to committees and projects.
  • Prefer prior experience in perioperative nursing, CNOR preferred.

  • Willingness to cross train and float between OR, PACU, ODS, and Endo units.
