About the position

The Registered Nurse position at the Atlanta VA Healthcare System involves providing comprehensive nursing care to veterans in a primary care setting. The role emphasizes patient assessment, documentation, and collaboration with healthcare teams to ensure high-quality care. The nurse will be responsible for triaging patients, administering medications, and performing various clinical procedures while adhering to established protocols and policies.

Responsibilities

  • Triages and promotes accurate documentation in the Primary Care (PC) PACT notes.
  • Observes, records, and reports patient's response or changes in patient's condition.
  • Promptly recognizes and responds to urgent or emergent situations.
  • Assists provider with exams and procedures such as accu-checks, weight/height, and Telehealth duties.
  • Performs treatments including EKG, injections, and dressing changes.
  • Completes encounters in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Prepares and administers medications, both oral and injections, per provider/protocol.
  • Tracks and administers required immunizations as per provider/protocol.
  • Completes written orders per provider/protocol.
  • Enters consults for social services, prosthetics, nutrition, etc.
  • Assists with and documents exit/discharged interviews, ensuring closure by confirming required patient education and orders have been processed/completed.
  • Instructs/directs patients to Lab, X-ray, and other support services.
  • Performs and enters urine pregnancy test results in CPRS.
  • Performs ear irrigations as ordered per provider/protocol.
  • Assists Team with panel management and chronic disease management per protocol.
  • Promotes evidence-based patient-driven care and completes Clinical Reminders.
  • Responds to Secure Messaging in a timely and appropriate manner (within 24-48 hours).
  • Contacts patients with normal and abnormal lab results as documented in provider's progress note.
  • Coordinates care, follow-up labs, procedures, case management, and addresses care coordination issues.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Graduation from a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the U.S.
  • Proficiency in basic written and spoken English.
