Under the direction of a pharmacist, a pharmacy technician performs pharmacy-related functions in compliance with department policies and procedures and participates as an active member of the pharmacy team to provide safe, rational and cost-effective pharmaceutical care for patients served by the pharmacy. This role is crucial in ensuring that medication orders are accurately interpreted and prepared, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the pharmacy operations. The pharmacy technician will engage in various tasks that support the pharmacy's mission to inspire health and serve with compassion. The pharmacy technician is responsible for accurately interpreting and preparing medication orders by filling provider orders, medication kits/trays, automated dispensing cabinets, and floorstock requisitions. This includes completing cart fills and code tray refills, as well as handling all controlled substances in compliance with regulations and policies. Proficiency with work-related computer and automation skills is essential, as the technician will solve problems related to automated dispensing cabinets, inventory management technology, label printers, unit dose packing machines, IV room automation, and other pharmacy-specific technologies. Additionally, the technician will accurately enter patient charges and credits. Timely delivery of medications to the appropriate patient care areas or departments is another critical responsibility. The technician must ensure that STAT medications are delivered when required and routinely evaluate medications remaining in delivery, return bins, and medication refrigerators. Adherence to regulatory guidelines for pharmacy compounding of sterile and non-sterile preparations is also required, including appropriate documentation as outlined by compounding policies. Customer service is a key component of this role, as the pharmacy technician must provide excellent service by answering the phone promptly, servicing the pharmacy window accurately, maintaining a clean and orderly work area, and being prepared to start working at the beginning of each shift. Completing assigned quality assurance work, such as expiration checks, clean room documentation, temperature monitoring documentation, inventory checks, floorstock inspections, and equipment cleaning/preventative maintenance, is also part of the technician's duties. Finally, the technician will actively participate in the training and mentorship of new personnel, including pharmacy technicians and pharmacy interns.
