The Registered Pharmacy Technician position is a part-time role that operates under general supervision, assisting pharmacists in filling physician's orders and preparing medications for both inpatient (acute care; hospital) and outpatient (ambulatory; retail; home infusion) services. This role is essential in ensuring that medications are accurately prepared and dispensed to patients, contributing to their overall care and treatment. The technician will be evaluated for advancement to a Certified Pharmacy Technician after completing an approved training program and passing the national technician certification exam, as applicable to state regulations. The primary responsibilities include accepting new prescription orders, entering and retrieving information from electronic health records, ensuring accurate billing for medication orders, preparing and affixing labels, and stocking prescription drugs. The technician will also be involved in non-sterile drug compounding and may operate technology used for drug dispensing, such as robotics. Additionally, the role involves assisting in the education and precepting of new pharmacy technicians and pharmacy students, as well as participating in performance improvement activities. The position requires a valid state pharmacy technician registration and a high school diploma or equivalent. Previous experience in retail, ambulatory, outpatient, hospital, acute care, or home infusion pharmacy is preferred. The technician must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, which includes neonates, infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics. The working conditions may involve periods of high stress, exposure to hazardous substances, and the need for personal protective equipment. Physical requirements include manual dexterity, the ability to lift and carry weights up to 50 lbs, and the capacity to perform repetitive movements.
