About the position

The Regular Teacher for grades 9-12 in Bilingual Spanish is responsible for the instruction, progress, and discipline of all pupils in assigned classes at Wendell Phillips Academy. Under the supervision of the school principal, the teacher will engage in instructional planning that includes providing written lesson plans and preparation aligned with the objectives of the instructional program. The teacher will establish positive learning expectations for all pupils and evaluate their progress while maintaining accurate records of their achievements. This role requires the implementation of various instructional methods, drawing from a range of instructional materials available in the school, and participating in the development and implementation of new teaching techniques. The teacher will also create bulletin boards and interest areas that reflect the current work of the pupils. In addition to instructional duties, the teacher will participate in programs aimed at improving student attendance and promoting anti-vandalism initiatives within the school. Establishing and maintaining reasonable rules of conduct in the classroom and on school grounds is essential, as is ensuring fairness in teacher-pupil relationships. The teacher will communicate regularly with parents or guardians regarding the academic progress, attendance, and conduct of their children, and may initiate conferences with parents, guardians, administrators, and ancillary personnel as needed. Participation in in-service meetings and professional staff meetings is also required, along with the potential coordination and attendance of class field trips and involvement in extracurricular and after-school activities. The teacher will utilize appropriate community resources to enhance the educational experience of the students.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Successful completion of all student teaching requirements and coursework for the appropriate teaching certificate(s) issued by the Illinois State Board of Education.
  • Possession of a valid Professional Educator License (PEL) or Educator License with Stipulations (ELS) properly endorsed for this position.
  • Knowledge of subject matter consistent with state certification requirements.
  • Knowledge of contemporary principles and practices of teaching and classroom management techniques.
  • Ability to modify instruction to meet student needs and cooperate with faculty and administration.
  • Ability to work effectively with pupils, parents, guardians, staff members, and community representatives.
  • Good oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
