About the position

The Relay Technician, Apprentice position at the Imperial Irrigation District involves performing apprentice-level work under direct supervision. The primary responsibilities include installing, maintaining, testing, repairing, calibrating, and troubleshooting complex control systems, protective relay systems, and AC/DC control systems. This includes working with microprocessor, solid-state, and electro-mechanical systems for the district's substation, transmission, and generation electric protection systems. The technician will be responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining protective relays, substation switching control devices, metering, telemetering equipment, control systems, relaying communications, and electrical equipment associated with high voltage substation equipment. This role is crucial for ensuring the reliability of the electric power transmission and distribution systems. In addition to installation and maintenance tasks, the technician will inspect substation operating conditions, troubleshoot failures, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards set by NERC, FERC, and WECC, as well as district policies. The position may also involve performing other duties as assigned, contributing to the overall efficiency and safety of the electrical systems within the district.

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, test, repair, calibrate, and troubleshoot complex control systems and protective relay systems.
  • Work with AC/DC control systems including microprocessor, solid-state, and electro-mechanical systems.
  • Install, repair, and maintain protective relays and substation switching control devices.
  • Handle metering and telemetering equipment, control systems, and relaying communications.
  • Inspect substation operating conditions and troubleshoot failures.
  • Ensure compliance with NERC, FERC, and WECC regulatory standards and district policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school equivalency with supplemental college or training courses in electronics.
  • One year of progressively skilled electronics or electrical experience preferred.
  • A valid driver's license issued by the State of California is required.
  • An official current driving record from the DMV must accompany the job application.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with high voltage substation equipment.
  • Knowledge of electrical safety standards and practices.
