About the position

Are you looking for a change in your Maritime Career? Have you ever wanted to sail on the Great Lakes? If so, then this position is for you! We are looking for Relief Mates to sail for 30 days. Key Lakes/Great Lakes Fleet is seeking Masters, Mates, and Pilots to join us on the Great Lakes. This role involves supervising and coordinating the activities of the crew aboard ships, boats, barges, or dredges. The position requires standing an 8-12 navigation watch, filling out trip sheets, and completing the Army Corps of Engineers Vessel Operation Report. Additionally, the Relief Mate will be responsible for inventorying and maintaining all medical equipment and kits. The role also includes developing and maintaining good customer relations for the fleet and performing other functions as assigned by the Captain. Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate activities of crew aboard ships, boats, barges, or dredges.
  • Stand the 8-12 navigation watch.
  • Fill out trip sheets and the Army Corps of Engineers Vessel Operation Report.
  • Inventory and maintain all medical equipment and kits.
  • Develop and maintain good customer relations for the fleet.
  • Perform other functions as assigned by the Captain.

Requirements

  • Must hold valid Merchant Mariner Credentials: First Class Pilot of vessels of unlimited tonnage upon the Great Lakes, Mate of self-propelled vessels, Mate of unlimited tonnage upon Great Lakes and Inland Waters, Radar Observer.
  • Must hold a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • Willingness to live 7 days a week in a remote environment with limited access to medical supplies and personnel.
  • Maintain licenses and qualifications as required by regulation, both current and future.
  • Good health in compliance with USCG NVIC 04-08 including US Coast Guard vision and hearing requirements.
  • Written and verbal command of the English language.

Nice-to-haves

  • Holds the Merchant Mariner Credentials: Bridge Resource Management Training.
  • At least 0-2 years of sailing experience.
