About the position

The Religious Services Assistant position within the Department of Justice is designed to support the Chaplains, volunteers, and religious programming of all faiths in the institution or the Life Connections unit. This role is crucial in maintaining a humane and secure environment for individuals preparing for successful reentry into society. The assistant will be responsible for managing ecclesiastical documents, materials, and other references for the institution's religious groups or Life Connections Program. This includes assisting in the preparation of devotional and religious educational materials, as well as audio-visual displays that enhance the religious programming offered to inmates. In addition to clerical duties such as typing, filing, proofreading, and maintaining time and attendance records, the Religious Services Assistant will help supervise day-to-day activities and programs within the religious program area. This includes ensuring the security of the institution while performing administrative tasks related to the inme pass system. The incumbent will also serve on planning committees, contributing to the development and management of logistical support requirements for the religious program. The position requires a commitment to maintaining the security of the institution, as correctional responsibilities take precedence over other duties. The role is full-time and offers a competitive salary range of $48,809 to $64,708 per year, with promotion potential to GL-07. The position is located in Edgefield, SC, and requires occasional travel for training and work-related issues. The successful candidate will be part of a diverse and innovative workforce dedicated to fostering a safe and supportive environment for individuals in correctional facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Chaplains, volunteers, and religious programming of all faiths in the institution or Life Connections unit.
  • Maintain records, ecclesiastical documents, materials, and references for the institution's religious groups or Life Connections Program.
  • Assist in the preparation of devotional and religious educational materials and audio-visual displays.
  • Work with the chaplaincy or Life Connections team to manage and maintain logistical support requirements of the religious program.
  • Supervise day-to-day activities, programs, and security in the religious program area.
  • Perform clerical duties including typing, filing, proofreading, and maintaining time and attendance records.
  • Record and transcribe meeting minutes and serve on planning committees.
  • Ensure the security of the institution as part of correctional responsibilities.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Education: GL-05 requires completion of 4 years of education above high school; GL-06 may require specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in federal service.
  • Experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level in federal service for both GL-05 and GL-06.
  • Ability to communicate in writing and orally.
  • Ability to work with data on the computer and collect and organize information.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies/guidelines (for GL-06).

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with processing financial documentation and maintaining office supplies.
  • Experience in the preparation of educational materials, including audio, video, and literacy libraries.
