About the position

The Data Analyst position at West Virginia University Research Corporation involves assisting investigators in the Department of Anesthesiology with data consultation, retrieval, and management. The role focuses on generating summaries, statistics, and reports using SQL and other data tools while ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations such as HIPAA. The analyst will work closely with clinical teams and researchers to provide customized data sets and support various research projects.

Responsibilities

  • Provide customized data sets by extracting and reporting data from clinical databases such as Epic Clarity and N3C Data Enclave.
  • Handle large, complex research data requests requiring a deep understanding of database structure and clinical variables.
  • Simultaneously manage multiple projects and prioritize urgent requests.
  • Demonstrate expert proficiency in SQL programming and data extraction/visualization platforms.
  • Use medical ontologies and classification systems to build clinical concepts for research.
  • Meet regularly with PIs and clinical teams to advise on data pull requests.
  • Collaborate with nationwide data and clinical teams on research projects using the N3C platform.
  • Mentor new hire analysts and provide education on data retrieval.
  • Identify relationships and trends in data affecting research results.
  • Develop data models and design data marts for simplified reporting.
  • Create documentation for data management standards and procedures ensuring compliance with regulations.
  • Perform quality control audits on clinical systems and data accuracy.
  • Design and implement warehouse database structures in collaboration with software architects.
  • Develop data extraction procedures from various systems.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Health Informatics, Computer Science, or related field required.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in data analysis and reporting.
  • Proficiency in Epic Clarity, Caboodle, and Clinical Data Model required.
  • Experience with N3C Data Enclave preferred.
  • Familiarity with healthcare research preferred.
  • Skilled in effective data collection and report creation.
  • Basic proficiency in programming languages such as C, C++, and Python.
  • Effective time management skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving skills and knowledge of regulatory aspects of protocol management.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with SAS or R for statistical assistance.
  • Knowledge of healthcare regulatory environment and HIPAA compliance.
