About the position

The Remote Pilot Operator (RPO) position at the FAA Academy involves supporting air traffic controller training services by simulating pilot actions and communications in a training environment. The RPO operates a simulated radar display and voice communication system, responding to students' commands and ensuring effective training for future air traffic controllers. This part-time role requires candidates to complete specific certifications and contribute to a multidisciplinary team focused on enhancing air traffic control training.

Responsibilities

• Simulate pilot actions and communications in the air traffic controller training simulator.
• Operate a simulated radar display and voice communication system during training exercises.
• Receive voice commands from students and input proper entries into the automated system.
• Translate displayed information into appropriate air traffic control terminology.
• Respond to students using proper phraseology via the voice communication system.

Requirements

• Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Basic computer proficiency.
• Ability to read and interpret diagrams and manuals.
• Clear and understandable verbal communication skills.
• US Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience working in a multidisciplinary team including multimedia developers and subject matter experts.
• Certification in ATC Tower, TRACON, or En Route simulation lab.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Working knowledge of FAAO JO 7110.65.
• Effective team building skills.
• Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
• Familiarity with current technological tools (tablets, notebooks, applications).
• Basic knowledge or experience with pilot/controller communications or phraseology.
