About the position

Our client is looking for an experienced Renewable Energy Partner with a strong background in sustainable forestry to join their team in Houston, Texas. As renewable energy continues to play an increasingly vital role in the global energy landscape, their multidisciplinary team is at the forefront of helping clients navigate this evolving industry. The ideal candidate will be responsible for advising clients on the legal aspects of sustainable forestry initiatives, including wind energy projects, green certifications, carbon offsetting, biomass facilities, and conservation easements. This role requires a deep understanding of compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations, and the ability to work closely with agencies such as the EPA, USDA, and the U.S. Forest Service. In this position, the Renewable Energy Partner will handle both contested and uncontested energy regulatory matters. They will collaborate with investors, developers, and landowners to structure Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) projects, ensuring comprehensive management of financial, regulatory, land, tax, and contractual aspects. The candidate will assist clients with site selection, land acquisition, regulatory advice, and the negotiation of contractual and tax arrangements for solar and wind energy investments. Additionally, they will be responsible for drafting and negotiating contracts related to the exploration, development, acquisition, and sale of land and energy resources, as well as advising on state and local tax credits, licensure, and permitting.

Responsibilities

  • Advise clients on the legal aspects of sustainable forestry initiatives, including wind energy projects, green certifications, carbon offsetting, biomass facilities, and conservation easements.
  • Provide counsel on compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations, working closely with agencies such as the EPA, USDA, and the U.S. Forest Service.
  • Handle both contested and uncontested energy regulatory matters.
  • Collaborate with investors, developers, and landowners to structure CCUS projects, ensuring comprehensive management of financial, regulatory, land, tax, and contractual aspects.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active membership in the Texas Bar.
  • Extensive legal experience with significant expertise in forestry-related renewable energy projects.
  • Proven track record in advising clients on sustainable forestry, carbon offsetting, biomass facilities, and related environmental regulations.
  • Strong understanding of CCUS projects, solar and wind energy investments, and energy-related litigation.
  • Ability to manage multiple high-profile projects and clients simultaneously.
