About the position

This is a 100% Contract position for 2 years with the possibility of extension or conversion to career status. Under the direction of the Repatriation Project Team, the Repatriation Project Policy Analysis incumbent will carry out duties to ensure the daily implementation of the Native American Graves Protection Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and CalNAGPRA (AB 275), which are state and federal regulations with the guidance of the UC Native American Cultural Affiliation and Repatriation policy. This position will include organization of internal/external documents, handling of confidential information and research UC San Diego cultural resource holdings. Foster community participation among Native American Tribes and Native Hawaiian Organizations by supporting consultation.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the daily implementation of NAGPRA and CalNAGPRA regulations.
  • Organize internal/external documents and handle confidential information.
  • Research UC San Diego cultural resource holdings.
  • Foster community participation among Native American Tribes and Native Hawaiian Organizations.
  • Develop new programs, policies, or procedures for possible implementation.
  • Analyze and develop solutions to a wide range of issues.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of Federal and State requirements for NAGPRA and other relevant laws.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working with Native American communities, preferably in California.
  • Strong understanding of the repatriation process.
  • Knowledge of consultation practices with Native American Tribes and Native Hawaiian Organizations.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong team building and leadership skills.
  • Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Strong policy analysis techniques.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to travel to meet with tribes and attend consultations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of common organization- or research-specific computer application programs.
  • Strong skills in analyzing, researching, and synthesizing large amounts of data.
