About the position

The Estes Park Trail-Gazette is seeking a dedicated Reporter to cover various beats in the picturesque mountain town of Estes Park, Colorado. This role presents an excellent opportunity for a reporter to gain valuable experience at a community newspaper that serves an engaging and vibrant community. The successful candidate will collaborate with our Affinity partner to ensure that all content is visually appealing and appropriate for our audience. Estes Park, located at the entrance of the Rocky Mountain National Park, is a popular tourist destination, making this position particularly exciting as it involves reporting on local events and issues that matter to both residents and visitors. The Trail-Gazette is the official newspaper of record for the Estes Valley, published twice weekly in print and online daily. In this role, you will be responsible for cultivating a strong audience both online and within the community through your mastery of AP style. You will be a compelling storyteller with a unique journalistic voice, developing a social media presence as the go-to source for public safety news. Your writing will encompass both daily news and enterprise stories, and you will be expected to generate fresh ideas for content that leverages social media and search engine optimization. Meeting regular production deadlines is crucial, and you will have the opportunity to utilize and experiment with new digital tools and platforms to enhance our digital audience through daily postings online and on social media. Additionally, you will review all content from our Affinity partner approximately 50-60% of the time, fostering a positive culture of teamwork and collaboration within the newsroom.

Responsibilities

  • Cover multiple beats in the Estes Park community, producing engaging and informative content.
  • Cultivate a strong audience online and in the community using AP style.
  • Develop a social media presence focused on public safety news and write about it in both daily and enterprise formats.
  • Generate fresh ideas for content using social media and search engine optimization.
  • Meet regular production deadlines and contribute to growing the digital audience with daily online postings.
  • Utilize and experiment with new digital tools and platforms to enhance reporting.
  • Review content from our Affinity partner 50-60% of the time.
  • Foster a positive culture of teamwork and collaboration within the newsroom.

Requirements

  • Degree in journalism, communication, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience at a daily newspaper or online news outlet preferred.
  • Proficient in news reporting and writing, shooting video, and using social media.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong reporting, writing, organizational, and story structure skills.
  • Understanding of emerging and existing platforms, including web, mobile, and print.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary.
  • Must live in the area or be willing to relocate (no relocation assistance offered).

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in multimedia journalism including video shooting and editing.
  • Familiarity with search engine optimization techniques.
  • Previous experience in community journalism.
