About the position

WJHL is seeking a dynamic and dedicated Reporter/Multimedia Journalist (MMJ) to join our team in Johnson City, TN. The ideal candidate will be responsible for researching, pitching, and reporting compelling stories for our newscasts and digital platforms. This role requires a proactive approach to news gathering, with an emphasis on delivering accurate and engaging content that resonates with our local audience. The MMJ will be expected to report news stories for broadcast, providing detailed descriptions of events and their backgrounds, while also ensuring that all content adheres to our high standards for journalistic integrity and production quality. In this position, the Reporter/MMJ will arrange interviews with individuals who can provide valuable insights into the stories being covered. The candidate will review and correct copy for errors in content, grammar, and punctuation, following prescribed editorial style and formatting guidelines. Additionally, the MMJ will evaluate notes taken during events to isolate pertinent facts and details, determining the emphasis, length, and format of each story to organize material effectively. The role also involves researching and analyzing background information related to news stories to ensure comprehensive and accurate reporting. The MMJ will gather information through various means, including research, interviews, and attendance at political, news, sports, artistic, and social functions. The candidate will pitch relevant stories to news managers and producers, receive assignments, and evaluate leads and tips to develop story ideas. Collaboration with producers and news managers will be essential to establish priorities and positions on various issues. The Reporter/MMJ will also be responsible for shooting and editing news events, producing and presenting reports across all platforms, and writing stories for the web and other digital and social media outlets. Engaging with viewers and users on social media sites is a key aspect of this role, as is performing special projects and other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Discuss issues with producers and/or news managers to establish priorities or positions.
  • Revise work to meet editorial approval or fit time requirements.
  • Shoot and edit news events.
  • Produce and present reports for all platforms.
  • Ensure all content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality.
  • Write stories for the web and other digital and social media platforms.
  • Interact with viewers/users on social media sites.
  • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to ad lib when required.
  • Superior on-air presence.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Valid driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Flexibility to work any shift.
