About the position

The Reports Developer position at CalSTRS involves supporting the Pension Solution project by creating and managing reports that are essential for the pension administration system. The role requires extensive experience in data integration, business intelligence, and report development to meet the increasing reporting requirements of the organization. The developer will work closely with business and IT teams to ensure that reporting needs align with business goals and objectives, while also improving the enterprise reporting framework and platform architecture.

Responsibilities

  • Review business requirements documentation to understand reporting needs/requirements with respect to business goals and objectives.
  • Collaborate with both business and IT Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to collect, verify, develop, and document applicable reports requirements.
  • Analyze, evaluate, make changes, and keep up to date all reports requirements and reports specifications.
  • Review, update, and provide written comments on all reporting related documentation.
  • Develop, review, update, and provide all applicable reports requirements documents and reports specification documents, as well as other applicable reporting analysis documentation using CalSTRS documentation templates.
  • Collaborate with other CalSTRS teams and designated SMEs to suggest and make improvements to enterprise reporting framework and platform architecture and properly document/refine all applicable technical specification.
  • Lead and/or assist in developing a set of standards, processes, and best practices in the use of MS SSRS and Crystal Reports for reports creation.
  • Ensure application meets the business, operational, and technology requirements.
  • Analyze use cases, design specifications, and engage stakeholders to elicit detailed information about the application under test to gain in-depth knowledge of the application.
  • Contribute to the creation of a test strategy and create technical documentation.
  • Build tests to verify application functionality and to identify defects.
  • Write code to create/modify scripts and programs to automate tests.
  • Participate in batch job execution, testing, documentation, troubleshooting, and production support.
  • Work with various CalSTRS teams to ensure enterprise reporting standards and processes are followed.
  • Design and develop reports as required by various projects.
  • Conduct informal and formal knowledge transfer sessions as directed by CalSTRS management.
  • Update Monthly Engagement Status and develop technical findings for schedule, resources, issues, risks, and mitigations during the monthly status review.
  • Submit a Final Report upon completion of the contract detailing project activities, accomplishments, and recommendations.

Requirements

  • At least five (5) years of experience working as a reports developer creating and fine-tuning SQL reports from data stored in various relational databases.
  • At least five (5) years of experience designing, developing, debugging, and supporting complex data integration interfaces and processes using various tools and technologies including SSIS, SSAS, SSRS, T-SQL and SQL Server technology.
  • At least five (5) years of experience demonstrating understanding of Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) methodologies specific to requirements elicitation and analysis.
  • At least five (5) years of experience working with Microsoft products/tools such as Power BI, SQL Server versions 2008, 2012 and 2016, SQL Server Reporting Services.
  • At least two (2) years of experience executing and testing batch jobs for a large enterprise-wide system and/or Government Pension Administration systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience developing SQL Reports as part of the data integration solution for a Pension Administration System or a large State of California system.
  • Three (3) or more years of experience working with requirement elicitation methodologies, documenting business use cases, business rules, functional and nonfunctional requirements.
  • Experience in the field of Data Integration, Data Conversion, and ETL.
  • Experience with source code management software, such as Team Foundation Server (TFS).
  • Experience producing and assisting in the creation of reports specification documents, data dictionaries, and test scenarios.
  • Strong understanding of SQL Server Replication Services and experienced in setting up replication between a single source and multiple targets.
