About the position

The Research Accountant Technician at North Carolina State University is responsible for managing and executing post-award financial transactions within the College of Sciences. This role involves providing comprehensive grant management accounting support to Principal Investigators (PIs), ensuring compliance with university and federal guidelines, and collaborating with faculty to effectively manage sponsored research projects. The position requires a proactive approach to financial management and a service-oriented mindset to support faculty in navigating the complexities of research administration.

Responsibilities

  • Execute and monitor post-award financial transactions in the College of Sciences.
  • Provide comprehensive grant management accounting support to Principal Investigators (PIs).
  • Initiate and reconcile financial transactions.
  • Manage no-cost extensions and re-budgets.
  • Prepare budget justifications, summer salaries, and salary releases.
  • Navigate compliance issues in alignment with University, Federal Government, and Agency guidelines.
  • Serve as backup for other grant specialists.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalency and one year of experience in accounting work; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Knowledge of established governmental budgeting practices and procedures.
  • Experience managing and reconciling grant accounts.
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft Financial system, PeopleSoft HR system, WOLF Reports, Labor Reports, Payroll Distribution Reports, PINS, RADAR, and the ePAR system.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) and GoogleApps.
  • Knowledge of Cost Accounting Standards (CAS) and Federal Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Circulars A-21, A-110, and A-133.
  • Knowledge of Uniform Guidance and Generally Accepted Privacy Principles (GAPP).
  • Ability to interpret, apply, and explain policies and regulations of funding agencies.
  • Experience with Excel to create and update spreadsheets and use of formulas.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous financial management experience and the ability to effectively manage budget and related financial matters.
  • Knowledge of University Spending guidelines and research administration (pre and post-award).
  • Experience working with NIH and NSF-sponsored projects.
  • Certified Research Administrator (CRA).
  • Proficiency in Smartsheets.
