About the position

The Research AI Solutions Engineer at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) will work as a Senior Software Engineer on a small team dedicated to developing, hardening, and maintaining artificial intelligence software tools for basic science and health research. This role involves leading the curation of an ecosystem of open-source AI libraries and tools, which will be utilized by researchers across UCSF to support advanced work in various scientific fields. The incumbent will focus on creating reusable patterns and frameworks that facilitate the integration of AI technologies into research workflows, ultimately enhancing the capabilities of UCSF's research initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Develop, harden, and maintain AI software tools for research purposes.
• Lead the curation of open-source AI libraries and tools for secure research environments.
• Create templates for transformers and inference models such as BERT and Llama.
• Develop AI integration libraries and vector databases for local and cloud discovery.
• Establish frameworks for multi-agent and skills-based tools.
• Craft implementation patterns for AI tools in on-prem and cloud infrastructure.
• Assist clients with complex AI solutioning requests and troubleshooting.
• Communicate with stakeholders through training, documentation, and requirements gathering.

Requirements

• Experience as a Senior Software Engineer or similar role.
• Strong background in delivering products and applications in a large organization.
• Experience managing release cycles and deploying complex applications.
• Familiarity with AI/ML tools and technologies, particularly GenAI/LLM tooling.
• Passion for open-source software and creating well-documented standards.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with Jupyter code sample libraries.
• Knowledge of AI tools for Neo4j and chatbot testing platforms.
• Familiarity with cloud infrastructure and secure environments.
