About the position

The FWS Wildlife Care Giver position at the University of Oklahoma is a part-time role focused on the care and rehabilitation of native wildlife. This position is designed for students enrolled at the university and involves hands-on work with various species in an outdoor environment. Responsibilities include daily feeding, cleaning, and monitoring of wildlife patients, as well as engaging with the public to address wildlife conflicts. The role offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in wildlife care while accommodating the student's class schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily rehabilitative care for wildlife patients, including feeding, cleaning, and monitoring progress.
  • Carry out maintenance projects at the facility as assigned by Animal Care Managers.
  • Learn and implement patient protocols by species.
  • Observe animals' condition and behavior, reporting findings to Animal Care Managers.
  • Perform patient admissions and intake exams as needed.
  • Assist with animal admissions and patient record entries.
  • Learn wildlife conflict resolution techniques to educate the public.
  • Update Community Liaison with patient updates for social media, including taking photographs and videos.
  • Rotate through animal nursery areas based on need and personal interest.

Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled as a student at the University of Oklahoma for the Spring semester.
  • Must have received and accepted a work study award for the Spring semester.
  • Reliable personal vehicle and valid driver's license required.
  • Motivated multi-tasker with a positive attitude.
  • Ability to manage stress in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Willingness to learn and grow, and to work hard.

Nice-to-haves

  • Studying biology, life sciences, ecology, veterinary sciences, or a related field preferred.
  • Wildlife rehabilitation or other animal care experience preferred.
  • Rabies pre-exposure vaccination recommended but not required.
