About the position

The Research, Analysis and Evaluation Epidemiologist (EPI 1) position is a remote, full-time role within the Washington State Department of Health. This position supports the Office of Nutrition Services by conducting research, data analysis, and program evaluations focused on maternal and child health outcomes. The role involves managing health data, ensuring data integrity, and collaborating with various stakeholders to improve public health initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze demographic, behavioral, and health outcomes data to assess maternal and child health trends and risk factors.
  • Conduct literature reviews to inform study design, data analysis, and evaluation.
  • Develop graphical representations of data trends and identify solutions for improving health outcomes.
  • Apply statistical techniques such as regression models, ANOVA, and survival analysis to large datasets.
  • Use SAS and R for data retrieval, manipulation, and statistical analysis.
  • Access SQL databases to support data reporting and evaluations.
  • Prepare data summaries and presentations for internal and external stakeholders using plain language.
  • Manage the WIC Client Information Management System and the WIC Electronic Benefit Transfer system.
  • Integrate data from legacy systems into a comprehensive database.
  • Maintain and validate reports in Cascades using SQL, and develop new reports as needed.
  • Provide technical assistance to team members and contribute to automated reporting initiatives.
  • Present research findings to healthcare providers, administrators, public officials, and the general public.
  • Provide input at meetings, workgroups, and collaborative projects.
  • Assist with non-research tasks to support office operations when needed.
  • Apply quality improvement tools to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and data quality.
  • Stay current on emergency preparedness training and participate in response efforts as needed.

Requirements

  • Experience using statistical software (e.g., SAS, R) to manage and analyze large datasets.
  • Identifying and resolving data inconsistencies to ensure accuracy.
  • Applying statistical techniques (e.g., logistic regression, meta-analysis) to epidemiological studies.
  • Analyzing healthcare datasets (e.g., prescriptions, hospital discharges, injury surveillance, death certificates).
  • Presenting research findings to diverse partners, including healthcare professionals, government officials, and the public.
  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency using standard office software, such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with WIC and/or SNAP-Ed data.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in the manipulation and statistical analysis of multiple public health datasets for evaluation of health care outcomes and health system performance.
