About the position

The Research Analyst 1 position in the Alman Lab at Duke University School of Medicine is a one-year appointment, fully grant-funded, with the possibility of renewal. The lab focuses on conducting investigations related to exercise-induced muscle secreted factors that modify osteoarthritis (OA) severity, as well as other studies in Orthopaedic Surgery. The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Benjamin Alman and Dr. Samuel Adams, engaging in the planning, development, and implementation of experimental procedures and specialized laboratory techniques. This role requires a strong background in various laboratory techniques, including mouse colony maintenance, breeding, genotyping of genetically modified animals, cell culture, molecular analysis, and proteomic analysis. The Research Analyst will be responsible for conducting mouse or rodent surgeries, including vascular catheterizations and open procedures. The position involves collecting data through observation and experimentation, operating highly technical laboratory instruments, and maintaining accurate records and scientific reports as required by the grant and department. The analyst will prepare tissue and specimens for complex procedures, devise experimental techniques for tests and analyses, and evaluate and interpret collected data to prepare reports that outline progress, adverse trends, and recommendations. Collaboration is key in this role, as the analyst will confer with the principal investigator to determine specific experiments to include in the research protocol and discuss the interpretation of results. Staying current with scientific literature is essential, as the analyst will review journals and abstracts to inform the design and development of original procedures and techniques. Additionally, the analyst will join a team of several analysts and trainees, supervising and training residents, interns, students, or lower-level personnel in laboratory techniques and procedures as needed. Other related duties may also be assigned as necessary.
