About the position

The Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) is seeking a Research Analyst specializing in Air Warfare to join the Operational Evaluation Division (OED). This position is critical in supporting the Department of Defense's assessment of the operational effectiveness, suitability, survivability, and lethality of Major Defense Acquisition Programs related to Air Warfare. The successful candidate will be part of a team that prides itself on delivering high-quality analyses in a timely manner, fostering an environment that encourages independent thinking and objective results. As an Analyst, you will provide support and advice to mid- and senior-level civilian and military officials regarding the operational evaluation of various aircraft, including airborne early warning, fighter, and bomber aircraft, as well as ground-based battle management systems. Your role will involve analyzing the design, execution, and results of operational testing and associated modeling and simulation activities. You will be responsible for providing independent assessments to the Department of Defense's Director of Operational Test and Evaluation, which requires close interaction with officials responsible for the planning, development, and execution of tests. This position will also require travel to various locations as part of the evaluation process. The ideal candidate will possess a strong educational background in relevant fields such as Physics, Engineering, or Applied Mathematics, coupled with significant operational or commercial experience. The role demands demonstrated computational and data analysis skills, as well as familiarity with military or civilian aircraft operations and advanced aviation technologies. Candidates must be eligible for a TS/SCI clearance, with preference given to those who already hold one. Responsibilities

  • Support and advise mid- and senior-level civilian and military officials regarding operational evaluations of airborne early warning, fighter, and bomber aircraft.
  • Analyze the design, execution, and results of operational testing and associated modeling and simulation activities.
  • Provide independent assessments to the Department of Defense's Director of Operational Test and Evaluation.
  • Interact closely with officials responsible for the planning, development, and execution of tests.
  • Conduct analyses that contribute to the assessment of Major Defense Acquisition Programs related to Air Warfare.

Requirements

  • PhD in Physics, Engineering (Aeronautical, Mechanical, Electrical), Chemistry (Theoretical, Nuclear, Physical), Applied Mathematics, Materials Science, Astronomy, or a quantitative interdisciplinary program with 4+ years of operational or commercial experience.
  • Master's degree in relevant fields with 8+ years of operational or commercial experience.
  • Demonstrated computational and data analysis skills.
  • Experience with military or civilian aircraft operations, acquisition, or testing is desired.
  • Familiarity with advanced aviation technologies such as low observable technologies, air-to-air and air-to-ground weaponry, advanced sensors, or data links is desired.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance (TS/SCI clearance preferred).
