About the position

The Research Analyst position at the Global Poverty Research Lab (GPRL) at Northwestern University involves supporting empirical research on poverty-related policies and programs across various countries. The role focuses on data management, analysis, and project support, providing an opportunity for hands-on experience in research design and methodology. Responsibilities

  • Partner with CMC Director of Operations in overall operations management and governance.
  • Clean survey or administrative datasets and prepare them for analysis.
  • Conduct analysis using advanced statistical and econometric tools.
  • Assist research manager with project development and dissemination tasks.
  • Develop analysis plans detailing statistical techniques for research questions.
  • Submit applications and modifications to the Institutional Review Board.
  • Cultivate relationships with implementing partners and communicate about study design.
  • Support research design tasks like power calculations and randomization.
  • Assist in writing grant proposals and reports.
  • Support the development of presentations to communicate study results.
  • Present analysis to investigators and facilitate productive discussions.
  • Conduct literature reviews for analysis plans and grant proposals.
  • Support data collection and process monitoring, including questionnaire design.
  • Run high-frequency data quality checks and communicate findings.
  • Prepare tables and figures with empirical results for publication.
  • Assist with paper revisions for peer-reviewed journal submissions.
  • Participate in lab interviews for other Research Analysts and mentor new analysts.
  • Support logistics at Lab-hosted events.
  • Supervise undergraduate research analysts as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in economics or another quantitative major.
  • Strong programming skills in Stata or another statistical software.
  • Strong quantitative skills with coursework in econometrics and statistics.
  • Familiarity with randomized controlled trials.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Fluency and excellent communication skills in English.
  • Ability to seek resources and self-teach new statistical and analytical techniques.

Nice-to-haves

  • Enthusiasm for empirical research.
  • Experience living or working in a developing country.
  • Familiarity with other statistical, visualization, or digital data collection software like R, ArcGIS, Python, or SurveyCTO.
