About the position

The Research Analyst position at the University of Chicago's Center for the Economics of Human Development (CEHD) involves active participation in scientific research projects aimed at understanding human development and the economics of education. The CEHD, established in 2014, focuses on interdisciplinary research that explores the conditions necessary for individuals to develop essential skills for success in society. Under the guidance of Professor James J. Heckman, the center conducts rigorous empirical research that informs public policy and promotes human flourishing across various life stages. The research analyst will contribute to a variety of projects related to human capital, labor economics, and education economics, gaining comprehensive experience throughout the research process. The role requires ensuring compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulations while analyzing potential solutions using established procedures. The analyst will be responsible for writing articles, reports, and manuscripts, as well as assisting in the preparation of presentations that communicate research findings effectively. Responsibilities will span the entire research cycle, including data cleaning and analysis, survey design, grant proposal writing, and research presentation. The position offers a unique opportunity for collaboration and co-authorship, allowing early-career researchers to make significant contributions to the center's initiatives. In addition to technical skills, the role demands strong analytical abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills. The research analyst will work closely with a team of researchers, utilizing econometric tools and programming languages such as Stata, Python, R, or Matlab to analyze large datasets and develop economic models. Responsibilities

  • Programs in Stata, Python, R, or Matlab to analyze data using econometric tools.
  • Collaborates with research team to develop economic models for projects.
  • Writes and/or proofreads academic papers, reports, and presentations.
  • Cleans and describes data, generating graphs, tables, or other summaries.
  • Writes and/or proofreads grants.
  • Trains and supervises undergraduate research assistants.
  • Responsibly handle confidential data.
  • Takes responsibility for transcribing and coding data; developing data collection instruments; presenting research; and recruiting and scheduling research subjects.
  • Recognizes abnormal results and varies conditions or procedures to correct problems; sets up and performs experiments.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Requirements

  • Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in a related field.
  • Knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in economics or related quantitative field, conferred by Spring 2023.
  • A minimum of one year of research experience with quantitative academic research.
  • Experience programming and working with empirical data.
  • Experience working successfully in stressful environments and problem solving.
  • Proficiency in Stata.
  • Proficiency in LaTeX.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite.
  • Experience with R, Matlab, Python helpful.
