About the position

The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) is seeking a Research Analyst [Planning] to join its Research and Evaluation Division. This role involves supporting the Director of Research and Evaluation with strategic planning, research, and evaluation assignments that align with ARC's Strategic Investment Plan. The analyst will assist in monitoring progress towards strategic goals, manage various research assignments, and contribute to projects that analyze socioeconomic conditions and economic development trends in Appalachia. The position requires collaboration with internal teams and external contractors to produce policy documents, reports, and other materials that inform ARC's initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Director of Research and Evaluation with strategic planning and evaluation assignments.
  • Assist in the development and monitoring of ARC's 5-year strategic plan.
  • Collect and analyze data to track annual progress towards strategic goals and objectives.
  • Manage various planning and research assignments related to socioeconomic conditions in Appalachia.
  • Conduct research and evaluation projects both internally and through commissioned contracts.
  • Summarize data into research findings for diverse audiences.
  • Prepare materials for workshops, events, press releases, and research reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in regional and community planning, economic development, geography, public administration, or related fields.
  • Two to four years of relevant experience in community or strategic planning.
  • Background and experience with research methods, quantitative and qualitative analysis.
  • Excellent writing skills for both technical and broad audiences.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent customer service communications.
  • Proficiency in software applications such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience collaborating on research and evaluation projects focused on strategic planning.
  • Proven public speaking and presentation skills for wide audiences.
  • Solid project management experience, including the ability to develop and follow project timelines.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with statistics and social sciences such as planning, economics, geography, and sociology.
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative environment and bring an innovative approach to work.
