About The Position

The Research Analyst position at the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) focuses on supporting the Department of Defense's operational assessment of military space systems. This role involves applying analytical skills to provide rigorous independent analysis and insights to key decision-makers in the Department and Congress, ensuring that warfighters are equipped with operationally effective and suitable space systems. The position is located in IDA's Operational Evaluation Division (OED) in Alexandria, VA, which is strategically positioned just outside Washington, D.C. IDA is a non-profit organization that leverages extensive scientific, technical, and analytic expertise to address challenging U.S. security and science questions. In this role, the Research Analyst will be responsible for planning, designing, observing, and analyzing operational testing of military space systems, including global satellite navigation, missile warning, and tactical satellite communication systems. The analyst will work both independently and in small teams to advocate for adequate testing, ensuring that military space systems are safe, effective, and suitable. This position requires developing firsthand knowledge of space systems by participating in Department-wide space working groups, attending test events, and analyzing results. The analyst will conduct independent, in-depth analyses of test results to assess the effectiveness and survivability of operational systems against realistic space threats. Findings will be presented to mid- and senior-level Defense officials, including presidential appointees, generals, and admirals, through oral presentations and written reports.
