About the position

CNA's Center for Homeland Security and Infrastructure Resilience is dedicated to developing data-driven, analytic solutions to address complex and emerging problems. The Research Analyst (Stats Focus) will play a crucial role in conducting analysis and planning, building decision-support tools, and creating training and exercises that support the safety and security of our nation's residents, visitors, environment, infrastructure, economy, and cyberspace. This position is designed for individuals who can lead smaller or less complex activities or serve as important contributing team members on larger projects. The role requires a demonstration of analytical competence and creativity, as well as the ability to work collaboratively in a flexible and engaging work environment that encourages iterative and creative collaboration at every stage of the problem-solving process. In this role, the Research Analyst will be expected to work with minimal or no guidance on well-structured pieces of projects, developing sound analytic frameworks and methodologies for addressing both structured and unstructured problems. The analyst will also be responsible for maintaining broad institutional knowledge of primary clients and sponsors, contributing productively to team efforts, and supporting business development activities by maintaining strong client relationships. The position involves significant contributions to research publications and analytic products, as well as effective communication of results to colleagues and clients. The analyst will work under supervision for more complex tasks and may lead small projects, demonstrating a positive attitude and taking responsibility for their actions and outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain broad institutional knowledge of primary clients and sponsors, including their culture and issues.
  • Contribute productively to team efforts and proactively identify collaboration opportunities.
  • Support business development efforts by maintaining strong client relationships and increasing visibility of work.
  • Interact with sponsors and clients under supervision, and independently with study points of contact.
  • Make significant contributions to research publications and analytic products for individual projects.
  • Communicate results of work clearly and concisely, both in writing and presentations.
  • Work independently on well-structured pieces of projects and under supervision on complex tasks.
  • Exhibit a positive attitude in interactions with colleagues and clients, providing guidance as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum Master's degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience; PhD preferred.
  • Ph.D. with 0+ years or Master's with 2+ years of experience in research and analysis.
  • Experience with geospatial analysis software such as ArcGIS or MapWindow for mapping and data visualization.
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis using one or more software packages.
  • Coding experience and ability to develop programs for mathematical computations.
  • Strong analytic curiosity and creativity, with the ability to operate independently.
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment and demonstrate strong critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with additional statistical software packages.
  • Familiarity with advanced data visualization techniques.
  • Knowledge of security clearance processes and requirements.
