About the position

As a Research Analyst at William Blair, the qualified candidate will play a pivotal role in analyzing the quality and growth attributes of companies within the healthcare sector. This position requires a deep understanding of the market dynamics and the ability to formulate investment ideas that align with client portfolios. The analyst will work closely with portfolio managers and other analysts throughout the research process, providing recommendations for new investment opportunities that are expected to generate above-benchmark returns. The role involves a comprehensive approach to investment analysis, including identifying and recommending new investment ideas that are suitable for client portfolios. The analyst will be responsible for monitoring developments that impact portfolio holdings, performing fundamental analysis on various industries and sectors, and providing a frame of reference for investment decisions. Clear and concise communication of investment recommendations to portfolio managers and fellow analysts is essential, ensuring that all stakeholders are informed and aligned. Additionally, the analyst will develop and maintain research relationships with company management, industry contacts, and research vendors. This includes interviewing company executives, attending industry conferences, and conducting field trips to stay updated on changes in company fundamentals and industry trends. The role may also involve participation in other projects as requested by management, contributing to the overall success of the investment team.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and recommend new investment ideas that are suitable for client portfolios in generating investment returns.
  • Analyze and monitor developments that impact portfolio holdings for which the analyst is responsible.
  • Perform fundamental analysis on industries and sectors to provide a frame of reference for investing.
  • Proactively, clearly, and concisely communicate investment recommendations to portfolio managers and other analysts.
  • Develop and maintain research relationships including company managements, industry contacts, and research vendors.
  • Interview company executives, attend industry conferences, and conduct field trips to stay abreast of changes in company fundamentals and industry trends.
  • Participate in other projects as requested by management.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of buy-side experience, with broad healthcare sector coverage preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of accounting and finance.
  • Bachelor's degree required; MBA, CFA, and/or CPA preferred.
  • Effectively prioritize time and manage multiple tasks as prices change and issues arise.
  • Ability to analyze/model financial metrics, business strategies, and valuation parameters.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Customer service orientation, including responding to requests in a timely manner.
  • Works well as a member of an investment team with other analysts and PMs.
  • Strong organizational skills.
