About the position

The Research Analyst position at the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) involves performing laboratory testing on various construction materials, primarily focusing on asphalt binder. The role requires analyzing, interpreting, and reporting testing results while ensuring compliance with industry standards. The successful candidate will work both independently and collaboratively in an accredited laboratory environment, contributing to the quality of transportation infrastructure in Idaho.

Responsibilities

  • Independently determine correct testing methods and complete testing on various road construction materials.
  • Review and analyze testing data to ensure accuracy.
  • Conduct research on test methods, material types, and construction methods.
  • Obtain and maintain required testing and sampling certifications.
  • Plan work tasks and data analyses independently.
  • Follow standards for sampling, testing, and reporting guidelines.
  • Ensure lab adherence to AASHTO R18.
  • Train new hires in laboratory procedures.
  • Log in samples according to Central Lab guidelines and track missing information.
  • Create final reports showing test results and compare them to specifications.
  • Use quality control techniques in sample security and data production.
  • Compile and analyze testing results.
  • Schedule, coordinate, and conduct laboratory maintenance.
  • Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Order supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Field calls from engineers and ITD employees to provide information.
  • Recommend acceptance/rejection of materials based on testing data interpretation.
  • Review data and calculations from other technicians for accuracy.
  • Report data and findings using standard review methods and personal judgment.
  • Research specifications and test procedures to determine the best testing approach.
  • Develop research methodologies to identify trends and communicate findings.

Requirements

  • Good knowledge of research methods.
  • Understanding of principles of statistics.
  • Familiarity with sampling theory and probability theory.
  • Experience in writing analytical reports or materials.
  • Ability to compile and analyze statistical data and draw conclusions.
  • Proficiency in using statistical software or spreadsheet software for analysis.
  • Skill in interpreting and communicating statistical material effectively.
