About the position

The Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) is an organization of approximately 500 member institutions of higher education in the United States and Canada engaged in graduate education, research, and the preparation of candidates for advanced degrees. The organization's mission is to improve and advance graduate education, which it accomplishes through advocacy in the federal policy arena, research, and the development and dissemination of best practices. Reporting to the CGS Director of Research, the Research Analyst is a key member of the CGS research team, working primarily on extramurally-funded research projects focused on 1) the impact of departmental practices on the academic success of doctoral students, 2) better understanding of pathways into graduate school, and 3) the mid-to-long term outcomes of investments in humanities graduate education reform initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to survey design.
  • Operationalize research questions.
  • Review and synthesize relevant literature.
  • Propose and execute appropriate analytic techniques.
  • Present results through conference presentations, data briefs, and other research products.
  • Perform other research and related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master's degree required; Ph.D. is strongly preferred in fields such as higher education, sociology, economics, demography, public affairs, urban studies, psychology, or human geography.
  • Experience working in academic, non-profit or government sector research unit is preferred.
  • High proficiency with Excel, SPSS, Stata, R, Tableau, and Qualtrics is required.
  • High proficiency in all Microsoft Office suite applications is required.
  • Strong quantitative skills required; experience with qualitative analysis is a plus.
  • Experience managing complex data sets is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to use web-based data dissemination and visualization platforms (e.g., Tableau, PowerBI, etc.) is a plus.
  • Must be professional and able to work with minimal supervision in a team environment.
