About the position

Steptoe LLP, a prominent Am Law 100 firm based in Washington, DC, is seeking a Research Analyst to join its team. This role is integral to the firm's research services program, focusing on both legal and non-legal research to support various practice areas. The Research Analyst will be responsible for handling incoming reference and research requests, ensuring that all inquiries are addressed efficiently and effectively. The position requires a strong understanding of legal and legislative research methodologies, as well as the ability to analyze and communicate research findings clearly to attorneys and clients. In this role, the Research Analyst will perform comprehensive legal and legislative research, ensuring that the best sources are consulted and that research is conducted in a cost-effective manner. Additionally, the analyst will engage in non-legal factual background research on a variety of subjects, including corporations, industries, and significant events, to support ongoing cases and firm matters. Monitoring legislative developments relevant to the firm's practice areas is also a key responsibility, with the expectation of preparing detailed summaries for dissemination to practice groups and clients. The Research Analyst will analyze research results, exercising professional judgment to determine the relevance of materials and their inclusion in the final reports delivered to attorneys. Effective communication is essential, as the analyst will need to present findings in a concise and targeted manner, whether orally or in writing. Participation in departmental initiatives, including training sessions for attorneys and staff, as well as involvement in special projects, is also expected. The role includes shared responsibilities for reference duties within the team, fostering collaboration and support among colleagues.

Responsibilities

  • Perform legal and legislative research in support of the firm's diverse practices.
  • Conduct non-legal, factual background research on corporations, industries, individuals, and events.
  • Monitor legislative developments in areas critical to the firm's practice areas.
  • Prepare sophisticated summaries of legislative and regulatory developments for dissemination to practice groups and clients.
  • Analyze research results and exercise professional judgment about the relevance of research materials.
  • Communicate research results in a targeted, concise manner appropriate to each request.
  • Participate in departmental initiatives including monitoring and current awareness service, training, and special projects.
  • Provide deliverables to clients, including newsletters and regular updates.
  • Participate in the shared rotation of reference duties.

Requirements

  • Master's in Library Science or equivalent work experience (1-3 years).
  • JD preferred.
  • Knowledge of standard legal research and specialized sources.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
