About the position

The Research and Appropriations Analyst I position within the Office of the Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives is responsible for drafting the annual state budget and analyzing substantive legislation. The role involves working closely with House Democratic members to support their legislative initiatives and ensure smooth committee operations.

Responsibilities

  • Digest large volumes of fiscal and policy data to assist House Democratic members.
  • Conduct legislative research and prepare memos and bill analyses.
  • Advise members during negotiations and debates.
  • Collaborate with members and staff to draft legislative proposals into bill form.
  • Ensure legislative committees function smoothly by providing guidance on committee procedures.
  • Assist caucus members, staff, lobbyists, and constituents with inquiries related to House member districts.
  • Analyze the Governor's proposed budget and state agency budget requests.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to summarize complex issues succinctly.
  • Ability to work in an unpredictable environment and willingness to work long hours when needed.
  • Professional demeanor and adaptability in communication with diverse personalities.
  • Demonstrated interest in state government, politics, and policy, particularly in Democratic politics.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel and Word) and Google Workspace.
  • Basic math skills, including basic formulary functions.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and complete assignments in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines.
