About the position

As a Research and Development Analyst at GEICO, you will play a crucial role in the company's strategic vision by conducting complex analyses that inform major decisions across various departments. This position is fundamental to the Research and Development (R&D) team, which is dedicated to innovation in the competitive auto insurance industry. Your responsibilities will include creating and supporting multiple types of insurance products, collaborating with departments such as Underwriting (UW), Claims, Marketing, and Advertising to help them achieve their business objectives. You will also interact with commercial-grade databases, whether in the cloud or on local servers, to generate large-scale data and translate it into actionable business insights. In this role, you will perform data exploration and R&D both independently and collaboratively, working closely with cross-functional business and technical teams to drive business and analytical innovation. You will contribute to project-related communications and be part of a team focused on pioneering new modeling techniques, deriving new metrics, and addressing complex questions that have not been tackled before in the insurance sector. This position is designed for individuals who are passionate about analytics and eager to make a significant impact in the insurance industry.

Responsibilities

  • Create and support multiple types of insurance products.
  • Assist various business departments including Underwriting, Claims, Marketing, and Advertising to achieve their business goals.
  • Interact with commercial-grade databases in cloud or local environments.
  • Generate large-scale data and translate it into business values.
  • Perform data exploration and R&D independently and collaboratively.
  • Work with cross-functional business and technical teams on business and analytical innovation.
  • Contribute to project-related communication.
  • Try new modeling techniques and derive new metrics.

Requirements

  • Proficient in R (Python is a plus).
  • Knowledge of SAS and SQL.
  • Familiarity with cloud databases.
  • Proficient in Excel, including VLOOKUP, pivot tables, charts, and graphing.
  • Ability to analyze data using statistical, mathematical, or data mining methods.
  • Knowledge of insurance rating products and principles.
  • Understanding of Claims, Underwriting, Marketing, or Agent operations.
  • Experience in process control and project management.
  • For R&D Analyst II: Master's degree or higher in a relevant field by January 2025.
  • For R&D Analyst III: PhD in a relevant field or a Master's degree with a minimum of 2 years of analytical experience by January 2025.
