About the position

A Research & Development Engineer at Barnhart is a highly technical team player that works to design & produce industry leading gear for the heavy lift & heavy transport industry. Based out of our Service Center in Memphis, TN, a R&D Engineer will collaborate with co-workers across the company to determine the best combination of functionality, safety, efficiency and value as they relate to the equipment we design and build to perform our type of work. The R&D Engineer gets to use learned skills and acquired experience to solve problems and create tools that will be used for years to come. The position also provides the unique opportunity to see projects from concept to completion.

Responsibilities

  • Create and develop innovative engineered equipment for heavy lift and transport projects across North America.
  • Research the viability of ideas from field personnel, project managers, sales personnel, and Senior Leadership.
  • Gather information and establish design parameters during the concept phase.
  • Develop workable solutions with detailed calculations during the development phase.
  • Stay in close communication with the Fabrication Services Department during the production phase.
  • Finalize detailed specification sheets, operation & maintenance manuals, and other support documents during implementation.
  • Obtain working knowledge of existing Barnhart heavy lift and specialty rigging equipment.
  • Function as field technical liaison for critical lifts, including risk management and safety evaluations.
  • Troubleshoot problems with equipment and provide support for solutions and repairs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (Civil with Structural emphasis, Mechanical, or Engineering Technology) from ABET accredited institution (3.0 GPA Minimum).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Experience with video conferencing platforms such as Cisco Webex, Zoom, Microsoft Teams.
  • Exposure to Engineering Design Codes (ASME B30 Series, IBC, AISC, AWS, ASCE 7, etc.).
  • Exposure to engineering software packages such as AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, RISA 3D, MathCAD, and Ansys Mechanical.
  • High mechanical aptitude.
  • Strong communication skills - both oral and written.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems and quickly determine corrective actions.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team.

Nice-to-haves

  • EIT Certification Preferred.
  • Public speaking experience.
