About the position

The Research and Development Engineer in Materials Processing will conduct independent research and development in the areas of polymer and metal formative processing, focusing on thermal and acoustic energy-assisted forming and process parameter development. This role involves developing, prototyping, validating, and testing novel material processing techniques as part of a DARPA program, while also producing technical documentation and CAD models for prototypes.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and manage assigned technical tasks under program PI direction.
  • Develop, prototype, validate, and test novel material processing techniques.
  • Inspect discrete material feedstock and document findings.
  • Design and produce CAD models of a prototype material conversion system.
  • Assemble, test, and operate the prototype system.
  • Test and validate the hypothesized material conversion process for effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Design process integration with in-line metrology and characterization.
  • Document findings and produce relevant technical documentation for project reporting.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field and two years of research and development engineering experience; OR a Doctoral degree in relevant areas; OR an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of solid-state consolidation and power ultrasonics-assisted materials processing.
  • Experience in materials characterization and material processing technique development.
  • Experience in prototype equipment design, testing, and validation.
  • Experience in operating and maintaining hardware used in solid-state forming processes.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Effective communication skills.
