About the position

The Research Animal Scientist (Dairy) position at the Department of Agriculture's Dairy Forage Research Unit involves conducting high-priority research on the nutritional value of alfalfa in dairy cow diets. The role is focused on evaluating the impact of alfalfa on dairy cow performance, nutrient digestibility, and environmental effects, contributing to advancements in agricultural science.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate the inclusion of alfalfa in the diets of high-producing dairy cows on performance, nutrient digestibility, and environmental impact.
  • Assess the impact of alfalfa quality in the diets of high-producing lactating cows on production, nutrient digestibility, and nutrient excretion to the environment.
  • Compare in vivo results with estimates predicted by in vitro laboratory analyses to better define forage quality.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Animal Science, Dairy Science, or a related field is required.
  • Expertise in developing and conducting ruminant nutrition feeding studies is required.
  • Practical understanding of dairy farm production in the U.S. is desirable.
  • Ability to initiate and lead research projects, interpret results, and prepare refereed publications is necessary.
  • Proven ability to work with a team of scientists and lead initiatives on broad agricultural problems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in conducting field studies related to dairy nutrition.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis software for data interpretation.
