About the position

The Research Animal Technician 2 position at The Ohio State University is part of the Center for Food Animal Health. This role supports the research mission by providing care, husbandry, and maintenance of a specific free Turkey flock. Responsibilities include daily cleaning, feeding, and breeding of the flock, as well as collecting and cleaning eggs for projects, hatching, and rearing chicks. The technician will maintain project rooms across multiple buildings, work with poultry, swine, and ruminants, and keep records for animal care, welfare, and facility maintenance. The position requires weekend and holiday support on a rotational basis, with at least one weekend a month, and being on call for facility or animal emergencies as needed. Compliance with USDA, IACUC, AAALAC, and veterinary regulatory requirements is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Provide care, husbandry, and maintenance of a specific free Turkey flock.
  • Daily cleaning, feeding, and breeding of the flock.
  • Collect and clean eggs for projects, hatch and rear chicks.
  • Maintain project rooms for multiple buildings in support of research.
  • Work with poultry, swine, and ruminants.
  • Prepare rooms, clean, keep records, and maintain a safe condition.
  • Support other members of CFAH and animal care staff in work in other facilities.
  • Provide weekend and holiday support for animals on a rotational basis.
  • Be on call for facility or animal emergencies as needed.
  • Follow SOPs and perform detailed oriented work while wearing appropriate PPE.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • 1 year of relevant experience.
  • Familiarity and comfort with livestock husbandry and care.
  • Ability to lift 50lbs and use power washing equipment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with animal research.
  • Basic understanding of bio-safety and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to use Word, Excel, and email.
