About the position

Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is seeking a Research Assistant 1 in the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension. This position is designed for individuals who are eager to contribute to research projects under direct supervision. The primary responsibilities include supporting specified research projects, collecting and assessing data, and communicating results effectively. The role also involves assisting in the general operation of the laboratory, including inventory management and maintaining sterile conditions as required. The Research Assistant will also maintain laboratory inventories, prepare reagents, and clean equipment to ensure a well-functioning research environment. Responsibilities

  • Run experiments and assays under supervision and record results.
  • Read and follow experimental protocols, which may include animal handling and tissue culture.
  • Compile and communicate results to the supervisor.
  • Follow university safety protocols, including the use of combustibles, radioactivity, toxic materials, and carcinogenics.
  • Perform calculations involving molarity, percentage solutions, and serial dilutions.
  • Prepare and operate equipment in experimental procedures, including blood gas analyzers, centrifuges, pH meters, and spectrophotometers.
  • Maintain and repair equipment according to manufacturer and university guidelines.
  • Ensure the laboratory is prepared for experiments and maintain sterile conditions as required.
  • Maintain inventories and prepare reagents.
  • Clean equipment as necessary.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • Less than 1 year of relevant work experience.
  • Basic knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and procedures.
