About the position

The Research Assistant 2 position at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is a vital role within the research team, focusing on the management and processing of research specimens. This position requires a strong commitment to maintaining the integrity of specimens through careful handling, accurate labeling, and thorough documentation. The successful candidate will be responsible for following established procedures and protocols related to the collection, processing, storage, and shipment of research specimens, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations. The role also involves effective communication and collaboration with various stakeholders, including clinic staff and research personnel, to address operational challenges and enhance technical activities. In addition to specimen processing, the Research Assistant 2 will oversee laboratory safety and ensure that the laboratory adheres to local, state, and federal regulations. This includes managing laboratory supplies and inventory, particularly chemical and biohazard materials, and ensuring proper disposal of hazardous items. The position may also involve the isolation of circulating tumor cells and peripheral blood mononuclear cells from research subjects, depending on the needs of the research projects. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, the ability to work independently, and a proactive approach to workload management. They will be expected to maintain a high level of organization and efficiency in their work, contributing to the overall success of the research initiatives at OHSU.

Responsibilities

  • Manage time and workload efficiently and prioritize workflow effectively.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with all groups within the Knight, Sponsors, and Clinic/Hospital Staff.
  • Work independently and demonstrate adequate problem-solving skills and awareness of available resources.
  • Follow procedures and work practices related to collection, processing, storage, and shipment of research specimens as defined in lab manuals, protocols, and study-specific reference materials.
  • Ensure specimen integrity through appropriate handling and accurate labeling of specimens, related requisitions, and documentation.
  • Perform isolation of circulating tumor cells and/or peripheral blood mononuclear cells from research subjects as needed.
  • Oversee laboratory safety and ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations by supporting and enforcing PK laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Maintain laboratory supplies/inventory by checking and logging stock monthly, including management of chemical/biohazard and sharps inventories and disposal of such items.
  • Receive, unpack, and organize research kits, working with study teams to order kits as needed.
  • Build research kits according to lab manuals and protocols and deliver them to appropriate locations for draws.
  • Maintain liaison with research personnel and clinic staff to solve specific operating problems and improve technical activities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by Clinical Research Manager or Program Director.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and no experience, OR AA (2yr) and 3 years of relevant experience.
  • At least 1 year of relevant experience in a research or laboratory setting.
